Why a Skincare Routine Matters
Your skin is your body's largest organ, and like any other system, it benefits from consistency. A well-structured routine doesn't need to be expensive or complicated — it just needs to be suited to your skin type and applied regularly. Even a simple three-step routine can make a visible difference within a few weeks.
Step 1: Know Your Skin Type
Before buying a single product, identify your skin type. This determines everything from the texture of your cleanser to whether you need a rich moisturiser or a lightweight gel.
- Oily: Shiny T-zone, enlarged pores, prone to breakouts
- Dry: Tight feeling after washing, flaky patches, dullness
- Combination: Oily in the T-zone but dry on cheeks
- Sensitive: Redness, reactivity, easily irritated by new products
- Normal: Balanced, few concerns, minimal sensitivity
The Core Three: Cleanser, Moisturiser, SPF
If you're just starting out, these three steps are non-negotiable. Master them before adding anything else.
1. Cleanser
Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, and environmental pollutants. Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser morning and night. Avoid anything that leaves your skin feeling tight or squeaky clean — that's a sign the barrier has been stripped.
2. Moisturiser
Every skin type needs hydration, including oily skin. A good moisturiser reinforces your skin barrier, locks in water, and keeps skin looking plump and healthy. Oily skin types do well with gel or water-based formulas; dry skin benefits from creamier textures with ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid.
3. SPF (Morning Only)
Sunscreen is arguably the single most important step in any skincare routine. UV exposure is the leading cause of premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and skin damage. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, rain or shine — even indoors if you sit near windows.
When to Add Actives
Once your skin has adjusted to the basics (allow at least 2–4 weeks), you can introduce targeted treatments called "actives." These include:
- Vitamin C: Brightens skin tone, antioxidant protection — use in the morning
- Retinol: Stimulates cell turnover, reduces fine lines — use at night, start slowly
- Niacinamide: Minimises pores, evens tone, calms redness — suitable for morning or evening
- AHA/BHA exfoliants: Sloughs dead skin cells, clears pores — use 1–3 times per week
The Golden Rule: Patch Test First
Before applying any new product to your full face, patch test it on a small area of skin (the inner arm or behind the ear) for 24–48 hours. This is especially important for actives and fragrance-containing products.

Final Thoughts
The best skincare routine is one you'll actually stick to. Start simple, be consistent, and introduce new products one at a time so you can identify what works — and what doesn't — for your unique skin.
